White Rock Baseball Stars Power B.C. to Canada Games Gold

White Rock Baseball Standouts Propel B.C. to Gold Medal

Rising athletes shine on national stage

White Rock Tritons players Kadyn Armitage and Lucas Wheeler played pivotal roles in helping Team B.C. secure gold at the 2025 U17 baseball competition during the Canada Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland from Aug. 8 to 25.

Tournament performance that led to victory

Team B.C. closed the tournament with a 6–2 record, highlighted by a 3–2 win over Quebec in the championship game on Aug. 16. The team’s path included decisive victories over Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Prince Edward Island, setting up the gold-medal matchup. Both Armitage and Wheeler were instrumental in key plays that sealed the final win.

Defining moments on the field

Wheeler, 17, delivered a game-changing throw from the outfield to stop a runner at home, while Armitage contributed with a crucial sacrifice fly. “When you win 3–2, those little moments make a huge difference,” head coach Cav Whitely said, praising the pair as consistent top-of-lineup performers throughout the tournament.

Leadership and energy on display

Armitage anchored the infield as starting shortstop, earning recognition from his coach as the best at the position during the Games. Whitely described him as a “calming force” and a natural leader. Wheeler, who transitioned from catcher to outfielder, brought energy and motivation to his teammates. “He came through in a lot of really big situations,” Whitely noted.

A memorable experience beyond baseball

For both players, the Canada Games offered more than competition. “It was a really cool experience, living on campus with other athletes and playing against the best in Canada,” Armitage said. Wheeler added that the atmosphere of thousands of fans in the final was “insane” and unforgettable.

Looking ahead to the next challenge

The two athletes’ success does not stop with the gold medal. Armitage and Wheeler have been selected to play at the Canadian Futures Showcase with the Toronto Blue Jays this September. It will mark Armitage’s second appearance and Wheeler’s debut. Both say they are excited to test themselves against Canada’s top young baseball talent once again.
