Surrey CEO Targeted in Parking Lot Attack
A shocking incident unfolded in Surrey last week when Surrey CEO Satbir Singh Cheema, head of the non-profit Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS), was attacked outside his office. According to police, Cheema called 911 just before 6 p.m. on Monday, August 11, reporting that he had been bear-sprayed in what he firmly believes was a deliberate and targeted assault.
Video Reveals Aggressive Confrontation
Surveillance footage shows two suspects pulling up in a white Dodge pickup truck near the PICS office at 80 Avenue and 128 Street. Cheema briefly exchanged words with the vehicle’s occupants before a masked man suddenly jumped out from the back seat, moving quickly toward him. At the same time, the driver appeared to record the incident on video.
“That’s when I knew something was about to happen,” Cheema recalled in an interview. As he tried to retreat behind his own vehicle, the attacker unleashed bear spray. Cheema managed to duck and turn, avoiding a direct hit to his face, though the spray still landed on his turban, arm, and shirt.
CEO Calls Attack Premeditated
Cheema swiftly returned to his workplace, washed off the chemicals, reviewed surveillance footage, and contacted the Surrey Police Service (SPS). He has no doubt the attack was planned. “It had to be the handiwork of some people who had an issue with our organization,” he said.
The Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society provides employment programs, settlement services, housing support, and social initiatives for immigrants, seniors, women, youth, and farm workers. Cheema stressed that such attacks will not deter the organization from continuing its work in the community.
Police Investigation Underway
The SPS confirmed that an investigation is ongoing but did not release further details on suspects or motives. Cheema remains confident in law enforcement and expressed gratitude for the strong wave of support he has received from the community.
“This incident only strengthens my resolve to keep working for the people who rely on our services,” he added.
