A Case That Still Haunts Surrey
The homicide of Michael Sandhu continues to weigh heavily on Surrey. Nearly nine years after the tragedy, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is still urging the public to come forward with any information that may help bring closure.
The Night That Changed Everything
On July 23, 2016, Surrey RCMP officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 14300 block of 90A Avenue. Two victims were found suffering from gunshot wounds. One survived, while 28-year-old Michael Sandhu was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries. Investigators later revealed that neither victim had a criminal record and both were unintended targets, with the shooting linked to the BC Gang Conflict.
A Family’s Endless Grief
Michael’s family shared that he would have turned 37 this year. They continue to mark his birthday with his favorite cake and balloons released at his birth time, though the celebrations now carry an unbearable emptiness. “It’s been nine long years since Michael was taken from us. The emptiness never fades. There may be people who know something—if so, please help us find justice,” the family said in their statement.
IHIT’s Renewed Appeal for Information
The case remains featured on IHIT’s Unsolved Cases page in hopes of generating awareness. Investigators strongly believe that someone in the community holds key details that could help solve this case. Anyone with information is urged to call the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
