From near amputation to joyful recovery, Cocoa the dog’s inspiring journey at Kitimat Humane Society will melt your heart.
A Second Chance for Cocoa
Just a few months ago, Cocoa’s future looked uncertain. After a traumatic leg injury, the playful pup was scheduled for amputation. But fate—and a lot of love—had other plans.
Since arriving at the Kitimat Humane Society in May, Cocoa has been winning hearts. Surrendered from a nearby community, the determined dog quickly became a shelter favorite.
From Hopeless to Hopeful
Shelter manager Maryann Ouellet couldn’t hide her smile when talking about Cocoa’s progress.
“He’s doing really good, but there is still some healing that needs to happen,” she said. “His skin is still regenerating, but his leg is more weight-bearing.”
Those small victories mean the world. Instead of losing a limb, Cocoa now spends his days running, playing, and enjoying a freedom he nearly lost forever.

Healing with Heart
Cocoa’s road to recovery hasn’t been easy, but the transformation has been nothing short of inspiring. His story is proof of what compassion, care, and resilience can achieve.
As he approaches the final stages of healing, it’s clear that this “wonder dog” isn’t just surviving—he’s thriving. And for everyone at the Kitimat Humane Society, watching him sprint across the yard is the best reward of all.
