Local Trainer Achieves Prestigious BC SPCA Accreditation
Delta’s Epsilon Dog Training, led by owner and trainer Emily Westfall, has achieved BC SPCA accreditation under the AnimalKind program. This recognition confirms her commitment to evidence-based, humane methods that prioritize animal welfare. According to the BC SPCA, Epsilon Dog Training is currently the only AnimalKind-accredited dog training business in Delta.
Raising the Bar for Dog Training Standards
AnimalKind accreditation helps dog guardians find trainers who use science-backed, positive reinforcement techniques. Westfall, who began her career running a dog walking business, saw first-hand how many dogs struggled with leash manners and behavioural challenges. She says the accreditation acts as a seal of approval in an otherwise unregulated industry, giving dog owners confidence that their pets will be treated kindly and effectively.
A Philosophy Rooted in Compassion
Westfall’s approach shifted after caring for her own dog post-surgery, which highlighted the trust and vulnerability in the human-animal bond. She believes in rewarding desired behaviours, meeting dogs’ needs without conditions, and avoiding outdated dominance-based methods. This philosophy aligns closely with AnimalKind’s mission to promote humane, science-driven training.
A Program Built for Better Pet Care
The BC SPCA launched AnimalKind in 2018, initially focusing on wildlife control standards before introducing dog training guidelines in 2019. Voluntary standards for grooming, boarding, daycare, and walking followed in 2023. The program ensures trainers not only meet welfare standards but also strengthen the bond between dogs and their guardians.
