Immigrant Success: Surrey Singer Wins Top National Honour

Surrey’s Lenya Wilks earns national recognition in Canada’s Top 25 immigrant success stories for 2025. Her journey inspires resilience and reinvention.

Immigrant Success: Surrey Singer Wins Top National Honour

Surrey’s Lenya Wilks Named Among Canada’s Top Immigrants

Immigrant Success and Surrey Singer — these aren’t just keywords; they define Lenya Wilks’ powerful journey of transformation.

From captivating crowds on Canada’s Got Talent to leading equity initiatives in Surrey, Lenya Wilks is now one of Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants of 2025. Jamaican-born and fearless, Wilks blends music, activism, and community leadership into one remarkable story of resilience.

The prestigious list, curated by Canadian Immigrant magazine, celebrates those who have not only overcome obstacles but also uplifted others. Wilks, now Director of Community Inclusion, Health and Equity at DIVERSEcity in Newton, Surrey, is a perfect example.

A Voice That Heals and Empowers

“When Lenya Wilks speaks — or sings — people listen.” That’s how her official bio begins. And it’s no exaggeration.

After surviving a traumatic home invasion and sexual assault in 2011 at age 21, Wilks moved to Canada in 2016, seeking both education and healing. She studied at Brandon University and continued her advocacy for youth and immigrants, even while working entry-level jobs.

“When I first arrived,” she recalls, “I went from international performer to a retail sales associate. It was humbling and heartbreaking. But I knew it was a step forward, not backward.”

Building Bridges Through Community Work

At DIVERSEcity, Wilks oversees programs focused on mental health, gender-based violence, child services, and more. Her leadership isn’t just professional — it’s deeply personal.

“I had to start over. I wasn’t sure who I was without my music career,” she says. “But those moments shaped the leader I am today.”

Her work supports other immigrants navigating unfamiliar systems and emotions — something she’s lived through herself. And now, she’s mentoring others through that storm with empathy and strength.

Words to Live By

Wilks shares advice drawn from every step of her journey:
“Don’t be afraid to start over and never be ashamed of where you begin. Every experience builds your story.”

She encourages newcomers to remain open, ask for help, and trust their purpose. Her path wasn’t linear — but it was hers. And now it’s inspiring thousands.
