Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke visits Kapil Sharma’s café after shooting. Police continue investigation; no injuries reported. Café has since reopened.
In a direct response to a high-profile shooting incident, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke visited Kap’s Café, owned by Indian celebrity Kapil Sharma and his wife Ginni Chatrath, after the business was targeted in an overnight attack on July 10.
Café Targeted in Early Morning Gunfire
At approximately 1:50 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, Surrey Police Service and the Delta Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at the café, located in the 8400-block of 120 Street, near the Surrey–North Delta border. Authorities confirmed that at least eight bullets were fired at the storefront. Although staff were inside, no injuries were reported. Window damage revealed multiple bullet holes.
Mayor Locke Offers Support On-Site
In the days following the incident, Mayor Brenda Locke visited the café, accompanied by Surrey Police and bylaw officers, to meet with the owners and show support. In a public statement shared to X (formerly Twitter), Locke said:
“I want to thank the owners for investing in our community. It was heartening to see customers coming in, supporting the café, and standing with one another. Together, we are keeping Surrey safe and resilient.”
Social Media Platforms Urged to Act
On July 11, Locke issued a press release calling on social media companies to ban criminal content. Her comments came after a video allegedly showing the shooting was circulated online, drawing global attention and sparking speculation about who may have been behind the attack.
Café Reopens, Community Responds
Despite the violence, Kap’s Café reopened within days and is now operating on regular hours—8 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed Tuesdays. Launched earlier this year by Kapil Sharma, one of India’s most recognizable comedians, the café has since seen strong community support, with residents showing up in solidarity.
Police Say Investigation Is Ongoing
Surrey Police say the investigation remains active, but no new updates have been released. Officials have not confirmed whether the shooting is linked to other recent incidents targeting businesses in Surrey. The mayor’s office has not yet responded to inquiries about visits to other affected locations.
