BMX World Championships and Pitt Meadows—two names that now ride together on the global stage. As Copenhagen prepares for the 2025 UCI BMX Racing World Championships, one Canadian athlete is racing toward history: Ryan Tougas.
The 23-year-old from Pitt Meadows is making headlines as he joins Canada’s national team for this year’s championship event, taking place August 2 and 3 in Denmark. Competing in the Elite Men category, Tougas is among 13 athletes representing Canada across the Elite, U23, and Junior divisions.
Last year, Tougas proved he’s no ordinary rider. He placed 12th at the World Championships in South Carolina, marking the highest finish by a Canadian male in his category. Now, he’s back—and this time, he’s aiming for the podium and the iconic rainbow jersey awarded to UCI World Champions.
Canada’s Best Races Ahead with Maple Ridge Veteran Coach
Backing Tougas is seasoned coach Adam Muys of Maple Ridge, who brings decades of experience to the track. Having guided the Canadian team through three Olympic Games, Muys remains a steady force behind Canada’s most ambitious riders.
Cycling Canada praised Tougas as “a consistent international threat,” and pegged him as a top prospect for a breakthrough in Copenhagen. The spotlight is firmly on him as the Canadian squad hits the track against some of the toughest competition in the world.
A Global Festival of Speed and Skill
The numbers speak volumes: over 3,300 athletes from 50 countries, and 7,000 fans expected in the stands. The BMX World Championships aren’t just a race—they’re a spectacle. Riders from powerhouse nations like France, the Netherlands, the USA, and host Denmark will flood the tracks with energy and fierce competition.
France leads in numbers with 449 athletes, followed closely by the Netherlands (331), Great Britain (318), and the USA (311). With such global participation, the stakes are sky-high—and so are the expectations.
Following the electrifying BMX racing events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the sport has exploded in popularity. That surge has carried right into Copenhagen, where the world’s top riders will battle for pride, medals, and national honor.
