White Rock hillside fire swiftly contained by crews

Fire crews in White Rock, B.C., contained a brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) on a steep hillside near Marine Drive, west of Nichol Road. White Rock Fire Rescue and the B.C. Wildfire Service tackled the 0.9-hectare blaze with both ground crews and helicopters. Marine Drive was temporarily closed, but no homes were damaged and no evacuations were required. By 2 p.m., officials confirmed the fire was in the cleanup stage and later listed as under control. The cause remains under investigation.

Man hospitalized after Surrey stabbing; suspect arrested

A man was seriously injured in a stabbing late Saturday in Surrey’s Newton area near 142 Street and 66 Avenue. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police responded with a large presence, including the Integrated Emergency Response Team. A suspect was later arrested nearby, and the investigation is ongoing.
