White Rock Launches Scenic Walkway Challenge With New Signs

The City of White Rock is launching a community walking challenge on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the installation of new wayfinding signage on its hillside walkways. The signs, placed at key access points across four walkways, aim to improve navigation and promote active living. Stretching 1.5 km and featuring 777 steps, the walkways offer scenic views of the coastline. The initiative, led by the Public Art and Culture Advisory Committee, supports city council’s goal of enhancing public spaces and community wellness.

White Rock Launches Scenic Walkway Challenge With New Signs

White Rock introduces new wayfinding signs on hillside walkways with a community walking challenge on July 31 to promote wellness and scenic exploration.

Community Challenge Set to Launch Thursday Morning

Residents of White Rock are invited to lace up their walking shoes this Thursday morning, July 31, for a unique walking challenge that celebrates the unveiling of new wayfinding signage along the city’s iconic hillside walkways. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of Centre Street and Columbia Avenue, marking the city’s latest effort to promote healthy living and enhance public spaces.

Enhancing Navigation Through Public Walkways

The new signage—installed at both the north and south access points of four key hillside walkways—aims to improve pedestrian navigation while highlighting the city’s natural beauty. Walkways include the Cypress Street, Helen Fathers Centre Street, Foster Street, and Vidal Street routes. These scenic paths connect White Rock’s picturesque waterfront to uptown residential areas.

A Walk With a View—and a Challenge

Stretching over 1.5 kilometres and featuring 777 steps across often steep inclines, the network of walkways offers both a physical challenge and an aesthetic reward. Locals have long appreciated the trails for their sweeping coastal views, but the city now hopes the updated signage will further encourage their use as everyday routes for fitness, relaxation, and connection with nature.

Cultural Initiative with a Civic Vision

The wayfinding signs were developed through the Public Art and Culture Advisory Committee and align with White Rock City Council’s broader strategic plan to foster vibrant, welcoming public spaces. According to a city statement, the initiative blends urban planning with artistic expression, adding both functionality and charm to these well-trodden paths.

Backed by City Council and Community Leaders

Mayor Megan Knight praised the project, highlighting its alignment with the city’s goals. “This project reflects city council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public spaces that bring our community together,” she said. “We’re proud to support initiatives that encourage residents to connect with White Rock’s iconic waterfront and scenic walkways.”

Walking Together Toward Wellness

By combining art, accessibility, and exercise, White Rock’s newest beautification effort underscores a larger trend toward community-centered urban development. Thursday’s challenge is more than just a walk—it’s a step forward in making public spaces healthier, more inclusive, and more enjoyable for all.
