White Rock Brings Frog and Toad to Life on Stage

White Rock Players Club stages A Year With Frog and Toad, a whimsical musical about friendship, with a local cast and crew from Aug. 6–10 at Oceana PARC Playhouse.

Community Theatre Embraces Whimsy and Heart

White Rock Players Club is set to enchant audiences this summer with A Year With Frog and Toad, a family-friendly musical adaptation of Arnold Lobel’s beloved children’s books. The show runs August 6–10 at the Oceana PARC Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd., White Rock, featuring a vibrant local cast and creative team.

A Director’s Vision Takes Shape

Helming her first production for the club, Langley-based director and Trinity Western University professor Becky MacDormand brings a collaborative touch to the whimsical world of Frog and Toad. “I draw the outline and let others colour it in,” she said, emphasizing the team effort behind the production’s success. Set and props designer Maddi Willoughby, who also acts in the play, created oversized storybook-style visuals to immerse audiences in the tale.

The Musical’s Heart: Enduring Friendship

With music by Robert Reale and lyrics by Willy Reale, A Year With Frog and Toad captures the quiet charm of Lobel’s original tales. The story explores the bond between the cheerful Frog and the fretful Toad across four seasons. “It’s a celebration of personality differences and enduring friendship,” MacDormand said, noting the show’s gentle rhythm and humor.

Cast and Crew Reflect Passion and Community

The production features a mix of seasoned performers and new faces, including MacDormand’s own son, Deacon. Musical director Allan Thorpe, a Vancouver Opera musician, leads a seven-piece orchestra that will perform live on stage. Stage manager Grace Moore and costume designer Hana Maihara ensure smooth backstage operations and imaginative outfits, while the entire ensemble embraces the joyful chaos of live theatre.

Live Sound, Laughter, and Lessons

Adding to the charm, all sound effects will be performed live—complete with a classic thunder sheet. “It’s song and dance from start to finish,” MacDormand shared, referencing the vaudeville style of choreography she researched through old musicals. Even with quick costume changes and multi-role casting, the camaraderie on stage is palpable.

A Joyful Journey for All Ages

Cast members, from high school students to club veterans, display excitement and pride in every rehearsal. “I’m having a great time,” MacDormand said. “Community theatre is special—people do it because they love it.” The show’s lighthearted tone, colourful visuals, and heartfelt message make it a must-see for all ages.

How to Attend

Performances run August 6–10 at 7:30 p.m., with 2:30 p.m. matinees on August 8, 9, and 10. Tickets are $20–$29 and available at whiterockplayers.ca, via email at boxoffice@whiterockplayers.ca, or by calling 604-536-7535. The box office is open Wednesday to Friday, 1–5 p.m.
