Cloverdale’s new Sport and Ice Complex will soft-open in mid-August, with full operations planned for fall. A third rink is on track for 2027 completion.
New Arena Nears Completion in Cloverdale
The highly anticipated Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex is preparing to soft-open in mid-August 2025, bringing much-needed recreational infrastructure to the fast-growing Surrey community. City officials confirmed the announcement during a council update on July 28, with Mayor Brenda Locke calling it an “exciting” milestone for the area.
Phased Opening to Ensure Smooth Operations
Surrey’s General Manager of Parks and Recreation, Laurie Cavan, explained that the facility will undergo a phased soft launch to test and fine-tune operations before a full opening later this fall. “As we usually do with a large new facility, we start slowly using it so that we can test all elements,” said Cavan. This strategy allows city staff to address any operational issues and ramp up programming steadily throughout the coming months.
Expanded Arena Design to Meet Growing Demand
Initially conceived as a twin-rink facility, the complex was redesigned in 2023 to include a third sheet of ice due to rising community demand. Rob Costanzo, Surrey’s City Manager, outlined the expansion in Corporate Report 2025-R172. The facility will serve a wide range of uses—including ice hockey, figure skating, skating lessons, and dry-floor sports like lacrosse and ball hockey.
Community Programs Begin This Fall
Two of the three rinks are on schedule to be fully operational for the 2025–2026 season of the Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association. City-run recreational programming is expected to begin in September. “People are already excited to get out on those Cloverdale ice sheets,” Mayor Locke noted, reflecting strong community anticipation.
Third Ice Rink Construction Underway
At the July 14 Land Use meeting, city council approved key development permits for the third rink. Ventana Construction Corporation has begun the tendering process, and staff will seek council approval for the first construction contract in September 2025. The final phase of the project is expected to begin construction in October and wrap up by early 2027.
$132.8M Investment in Local Recreation
The total budget for the Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex stands at $132.8 million, including the third sheet of ice and outdoor landscaping. Once completed, the facility will be a hub for youth sports, recreational activities, and community engagement—marking a major investment in the future of Surrey’s growing population.
