Cloverdale Co-op Essentials Shuts Down After One Year

Cloverdale Co-op Essentials store to close July 26 due to low foot traffic. Otter Co-op offers 25% off till closing.

Cloverdale Co-op Essentials Shuts Down After One Year

Co-op Bids Farewell to Cloverdale Location

After just over a year in operation, the Cloverdale Co-op Essentials food store is preparing to close its doors for good. Otter Co-op, in partnership with Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), confirmed the decision via Facebook on July 22, stating the store’s final day will be July 26.

This announcement follows a year-long pilot project to introduce a smaller-format food store to the Cloverdale area. The venture aimed to offer a fresh, convenient shopping experience but ultimately struggled to meet its targets.

“Despite the team’s best efforts, customer traffic and participation remained below expectations,” the company explained in its statement. As a result, long-term sustainability was not possible.

Community Support Appreciated with Storewide Discount

To thank the Cloverdale community for its support over the past year, Otter Co-op is offering 25% off all in-store items until the closing date. The offer serves as a gesture of appreciation and encourages one last round of local shopping.

Located in the Brick Yard Station complex at the busy corner of 176th Street and Highway 10, the store opened with much excitement in June 2024. Its grand opening saw company leaders, including Otter Co-op CEO Jack Nicholson and FCL Vice President Rick Fernandes, welcome residents with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Co-op Essentials was described at the time as “a first-of-its-kind food store” for Surrey. While the concept showed promise, it ultimately didn’t generate the level of foot traffic needed to succeed.

What’s Next for Shoppers

Although this closure marks the end of the Cloverdale location, Otter Co-op continues to serve customers across the region through its other retail and food stores. The company remains committed to community-focused service and innovation.
