B.C. Watchdog Seeks Witnesses in Surrey Police Arrest

B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating a Saturday arrest in Surrey that led to injury. Witnesses are urged to come forward with information or video.

Early-Morning Arrest Under Investigation in Surrey

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is seeking witnesses following an arrest in Surrey on Saturday, July 12, that resulted in one man being hospitalized. The incident occurred near the busy intersection of 104 Avenue and 148 Street around 7:30 a.m.

Erratic Driving and Breach of Court Order Reported

Police initially responded to reports of a green Dodge Ram being driven dangerously in the Fleetwood neighbourhood. A short time later, officers received another call alleging that the same individual had violated a court order and broken into a residence in the 16400-block of 87A Avenue.

Arrest Made Near RCMP Detachment

According to the IIO, the suspect drove the vehicle to the RCMP detachment located in the 10400-block of 148 Street. A responding officer observed the man attempting to flee the area on foot. The arrest occurred shortly thereafter near the intersection of 104 Avenue and 148 Street.

Man Taken to Hospital, Watchdog Notified

Following the arrest, the individual was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. The IIO, which investigates all police-involved incidents resulting in serious harm or death, was notified shortly after the event and has since launched an investigation into the circumstances.

Public Asked to Assist Investigation

The IIO is calling on any individuals who witnessed the incident or have relevant video footage to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact the IIO’s Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or submit a tip via the contact form available at iiobc.ca.
