A Beloved Children’s Classic Comes to Life

What happens when a daydreamer’s whimsical stories leap from the page to the stage? Magic. That’s exactly what White Rock audiences can expect this August when A Year With Frog and Toad arrives at the Oceana PARC Playhouse.

Inspired by Arnold Lobel’s cherished children’s books, this feel-good musical is more than just a show—it’s a celebration of friendship, nature, and the changing seasons.

From Storybook to Stage

Arnold Lobel, the author who called himself a “daydreamer” rather than a writer or illustrator, created a cozy world full of birds, frogs, turtles, and more in his Frog and Toad series. After his passing, his daughter Adrianne, along with actor Mark Linn-Baker, adapted these gentle tales into a stage show. Composer Robert Reale and lyricist Willy Reale added music and lyrics to bring it all to life.

Now, the Tony-nominated Broadway hit is making its way to White Rock for a limited run—from August 6 to 10—courtesy of the White Rock Players Club.

A Heartwarming Summer Treat for Families

Directed by Rebecca Martin in her club debut, this production promises charm, laughter, and toe-tapping tunes. Martin, a lifelong fan of the books, has teamed up with musical director Allan Thorpe (of Vancouver Opera fame) to build a show filled with energy and warmth.

Evening performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday, while matinees start at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—perfect for younger children who need an earlier bedtime.

A Talented Cast Brings the Forest to Life

Amanda Russell and Cath de la Rambelje take center stage as the lovable Frog and Toad. Meanwhile, Rebekah MacEwan returns as Bird #1, and Naomi Jeans flutters in as Bird #2. The colorful animal ensemble includes Miri Grad, Farida Rawda, Maclean Smith, Alex Walker, and Maddi Willoughby, who will bring the forest to life with song, dance, and playfulness.

With lively choreography and a strong focus on storytelling, the entire production is designed to feel like stepping into a moving picture book.
