Gatka Championship Wows Surrey with Tradition and Talent
Surrey’s Cloverdale Agriplex turned into a fierce battlefield of skill and spirit as Gatka fighters returned for a thrilling two-day showdown. Drawing crowds of over 3,000, the Surrey-hosted Damdama Gatka Championships brought together 72 top athletes from across North America on July 5 and 6.
According to event spokesperson Vaneet Kaur, the all-invitational tournament pushed competitors harder than ever before. “It was best-on-best, and the energy was electric,” she said. She hopes the weekend ignites interest in even more spectators and aspiring fighters alike.
Celebrating Faith Through Combat
The tournament featured junior and senior categories, with knockout rounds leading to intense finals. Fighters, some as young as 15, showcased their mastery in one-on-one bouts using traditional fari-soti weapons. Strikes to different body zones earned points, making every move matter.
Gatka isn’t just combat—it’s spiritual. Originating in 15th-century Punjab, Gatka teaches discipline, focus, and deep cultural connection. The Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji Gatka Akhara (SBDSJGA), based in Surrey since 2003, hosted the event and is now home to many of Canada’s top practitioners.
Stories from the Arena
Surrey resident Tegbir Singh Kane, who has practiced for over a decade, shared how Gatka became more than a hobby. “The akhara welcomed me and helped me grow—mentally and physically,” he said.
For Simran Kaur, another competitor, the experience was emotional. “In the akhara, it’s like something bigger takes over,” she said. “It connects you to our warrior history and faith.” She believes the sport strengthens not just the body but also one’s belief system.
A Growing Movement
New this year, a vibrant market section gave local vendors a platform to showcase handmade goods. This addition reflects SBDSJGA’s goal to raise Gatka’s profile and deepen community engagement.
Planning is already underway for the 2026 tournament, which will again return to the Agriplex. Inspired by their late founder, Bhai Charanjit Singh, SBDSJGA is committed to growing Gatka’s global presence—starting right here in Surrey.
