A 40-year-old Surrey woman was fatally stabbed in Vancouver’s Gastown early Sunday. Police have identified the victim and arrested a suspect, now released.
Victim Identified in Early Morning Gastown Stabbing
A 40-year-old woman from Surrey has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing in Vancouver’s historic Gastown district early Sunday morning, July 14. Vancouver Police confirmed the woman’s identity as Ivy Michelle Bell.
Incident Occurred Near Carrall and Water Streets
Emergency services responded to a 911 call around 4:30 a.m. reporting a stabbing near the intersection of Carrall Street and Water Street. First responders arrived promptly and attempted life-saving measures on the victim, who was then rushed to hospital. Despite efforts, Bell succumbed to her injuries.
Suspect Arrested and Released Pending Investigation
Vancouver Police arrested a 31-year-old man at the scene. Authorities have since released him, pending further investigation. Sergeant Steve Addison stated that police believe the victim and the suspect were known to each other. No charges have yet been laid.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Information
Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact the Vancouver Police Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500. Police are also reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and buildings to piece together the events leading up to the fatal assault.
