Surrey plans to replace Bear Creek Bridge and expand 140 Street to four lanes with sidewalks and bike lanes by 2026. Council vote set for July 14.

A Safer, Smoother Ride Is on the Way

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck on 140 Street during rush hour or cautiously navigating the narrow lanes by Bear Creek Bridge, there’s good news on the horizon. After over five decades of service, the bridge is finally due for replacement—and Surrey City Council is preparing to make it official.

Council to Decide on $7.57M Project

The council is scheduled to vote on July 14 on a proposed $7.57 million contract for the project, with B.A. Blacktop Infrastructure Inc. lined up as the contractor. The total budget would be capped at $8.33 million. Should the plan pass, construction would begin this summer and wrap up by fall 2026.

What This Means for the Community

Beyond the bridge replacement, the city plans to widen 140 Street from two to four lanes between 80B Avenue and the 8200-block. That means less congestion, shorter commutes, and a much smoother experience for drivers.

But it’s not just about cars.

The design also includes new sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes, giving pedestrians and cyclists a safer, more comfortable route through the area. This change supports a more walkable, bike-friendly Surrey—something many locals have been asking for.

Modernizing More Than Just Roads

Included in the plan is the replacement of the water main that runs beneath the bridge. It’s a behind-the-scenes upgrade, but one that’s essential for improving infrastructure reliability and supporting future growth.

Building a Better Surrey Together

This project reflects more than just construction—it’s about meeting the evolving needs of Surrey’s growing population. By investing in safer roads, improved transit options, and modern infrastructure, the city is laying the foundation for a more connected and livable community.

Quick Facts:

  • Project: Replace Bear Creek Bridge, widen 140 Street
  • Budget: $7.57M (with a limit of $8.33M)
  • Contractor: B.A. Blacktop Infrastructure Inc.
  • Vote Date: July 14
  • Construction Timeline: Summer 2025 – Fall 2026
