White Rock Rugby Stars Join Team Canada Squads

Local Rugby Talent Heads Global with Team Canada

A surge of Team Canada pride is rippling through White Rock and South Surrey, with several local rugby athletes making national squads set to compete internationally. As Canada’s women prepare for their second match in South Africa, and the men gear up for two home test matches, familiar Peninsula names are on the rosters.

Women’s Squad Looks to Build on Momentum

After a solid 50–20 victory over the Springboks, Canada’s women’s rugby team is ready for round two in Gqeberha, South Africa. The squad features Pacific Academy grad Shoshanah Seumanutafa in the starting lineup, while Earl Marriott Secondary alum Rachel Smith joins as a finisher.

Coach Kevin Rouet emphasized that this tour is about building depth, confidence, and giving all 32 players game time ahead of the World Cup. The match kicks off at 1:30 p.m. local time (4:30 a.m. PT) on Saturday, July 12 at Nelson Mandela Stadium. Fans can catch the action live on TSN3 and TSN+.

South Surrey Dominates Men’s Roster

Not to be outdone, the men’s national team has its own share of Peninsula power. Calixto Martinez, Izzak Kelly, Kyle Tremblay, and Talon McMullin — all Earl Marriott grads and Bayside RFC standouts — have been named to Canada’s squad by head coach Stephen Meehan.

Canada will face Belgium on July 12 at 5 p.m. MT, followed by a clash with Spain on July 18 at 7 p.m. MT. Both matches will be held at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton, and broadcast live on TSN2 and TSN+.#

More Than Just a Game

For the local athletes, this isn’t just about rugby — it’s about representing their community and proving their skills on the international stage. Their selection is a testament to the strong rugby culture in South Surrey and White Rock, nurtured by clubs like Bayside RFC and supported by schools like Earl Marriott Secondary.
