Surrey Begins $10M Upgrade on 72nd Avenue in Clayton

Work Starts on Clayton’s 72nd Avenue Road Widening

Construction has officially kicked off on 72nd Avenue in Clayton, marking a major milestone in Surrey’s largest-ever road infrastructure investment.

Phase II of the 72nd Avenue Corridor Project is now underway, focusing on the stretch between 188th and 196th Streets. The initiative aims to turn 72nd Avenue into a seamless, four-lane east-west arterial road — improving traffic flow, boosting safety, and supporting the city’s growing communities.

A Key Project for a Growing City

“This road widening in Clayton is a crucial step in our multi-phase strategy,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. She highlighted the city’s commitment to infrastructure that meets the demands of rapid urban growth.

The current work includes expanding the road from two to four lanes, new sidewalks and bike lanes, dedicated turning lanes, and a new signalized intersection at 188th Street. A pedestrian crossing will also be added at 189th Street.

Parking Needs Meet Smart Design

One standout feature of this phase is its balanced approach to road expansion and parking. Rafael Villerreal, Surrey’s Director of Transportation, explained how Clayton’s high demand for parking was addressed.

While arterial roads typically eliminate on-street parking, the city is adding 74 new parking spaces on adjacent roads to offset the changes. The project will also retain 97 existing spaces along 72nd Avenue.

A Timeline for Transformation

Phase I, from Fraser Highway to 184th Street, wrapped up earlier this year. The full Corridor Project consists of four phases, with key dates already set:

  • Phase II: 188th–196th Street (complete by Spring 2026)
  • Phase III: 152nd Street to Hwy 15 (starts Summer 2025)
  • Phase IV: 144th Street to 152nd Street (starts Fall 2025)

A $10M Contract to Fuel Mobility

On April 28, Surrey City Council approved Corporate Report 2025-R090, awarding the $9.17M construction contract to Tybo Contracting Ltd. The city set a project spending limit of $10.1 million, covering contingencies and taxes.

This major investment is mostly funded through Development Cost Charges (DCCs) — covering 85% of transportation work and 55% of utility work — with the remainder drawn from general revenue.

Stay tuned to Surrey Speak for updates on the city’s biggest infrastructure moves and how they’re shaping Surrey’s future.
