Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke Becomes a Jeopardy! Question
Brenda Locke, Surrey’s mayor, made a surprise appearance on Jeopardy! this week—not as a contestant, but as the subject of a clue. Viewers tuning into the July 8 episode saw her name pop up in a question about Canadian government titles, airing on both CHEK TV and across the U.S.
The clue read: “IN CANADA, HIS OR HER WORSHIP IS FOR PEOPLE WITH THIS GOVERNMENT JOB, LIKE SCOTT GILLINGHAM OF WINNIPEG & SURREY, B.C.’S BRENDA LOCKE.”
None of the contestants nailed the answer. Scott guessed “MP”, Dan said “minister”, and Elise opted to skip. The correct response? “What is mayor?”
Mayor Locke Reacts With Humor and Pride
Speaking to local media before the show aired, Locke said she had no idea about the mention until she was informed that something was being mailed to her. “We didn’t know, it was a big surprise,” she said, amused by the whole event.
While the clue may have seemed too easy for a Canadian audience, Locke appreciated the moment. “Of course it is [a good omen], I’ll take any omen I can get,” she joked. “It’s a pretty cool thing to have, though, to be a Jeopardy! question. Who’d have thought?”
A Fun Moment on a Global Stage
Despite the contestants’ confusion, the moment gave Surrey—and Locke herself—a lighthearted spotlight on an international platform. While it may have been a trivia miss for the players, for the city of Surrey, it was a win.
