Surrey Newcomers Hub Offers Fresh Start for Immigrants
For many Surrey newcomers, the path to settling in Canada starts with support, not just paperwork. At the newly opened Newcomers Hub by Options Community Services, located at 13520 78 Ave., this support comes wrapped in empathy, language, and practical help — all under one roof.
Launched in April 2025, the hub is already serving thousands. Diana Delgado, executive director of employment and immigrant services, shared that more than 2,000 clients sought help last year — a number that continues to grow. “We’re here to support newcomers in building Canada as their new home,” she said.
From Language Barriers to Belonging
Services at the hub include employment support, integration planning, language assessments, conversation circles, and referrals. With nearly 50 staff speaking 25 languages, communication is never a barrier. And there’s no time limit for newcomers to access help — only Canadian citizens are excluded from eligibility.
Clients go through a personalized needs assessment, ensuring each individual gets guidance tailored to their situation — whether that’s English classes, job prep, or help with paperwork. “We meet people where they are,” said Delgado.
A Refugee’s Journey from Fear to Stability
Partab Singh, a refugee from Afghanistan, knows firsthand the difference these services make. When he arrived in 2019, he faced health issues, no housing, and zero income. Out of desperation, his daughters quit school to work.
In 2022, Singh was referred to Options by a school social worker. That was the turning point. “The staff listened, understood my story, and helped me rebuild,” Singh said. They helped him access disability benefits, income support, and housing subsidies. His daughters returned to school, and the family finally felt stable.
Changing Perceptions, Building Trust
Beyond finances and housing, Singh credits a workshop called Introduction to Policing for Newcomers in Surrey for changing his worldview. “Back in Afghanistan, we feared the police,” he shared. “But in that session, I learned how Canada protects its people. It gave me peace.”
Now, Singh feels like he truly belongs. “Canada isn’t just a place I moved to — it’s home,” he said, smiling.
