Summer Road Safety: Tips for Drivers and Pedestrians

Stay alert this summer! Drivers and pedestrians must follow safety tips near schools, parks, and playgrounds to avoid accidents.

New “Pets” feature ensures furry friends ride comfortably too

Summer Safety Alert: Watch Out Near Schools and Parks

As summer break begins, road safety takes center stage. With kids outdoors and schools hosting summer programs, summer safety in school zones is more important than ever. Both drivers and pedestrians need to stay alert and follow precautions to avoid accidents around active school sites, parks, and play areas.

Drivers: Stay Sharp Behind the Wheel

Even with school out, many campuses are still buzzing with summer learning. If a school has a “Summer School” sign under its regular school zone sign, that 30km/h speed limit still applies. Always scan for these signs near schools and playgrounds.

Approaching a crosswalk? Look both ways and watch for kids. If another vehicle slows down ahead of you, they might be stopping for a pedestrian you can’t yet see. Slow down, be patient, and leave space for sudden stops.

Most importantly, keep distractions away. ICBC notes that drivers are 3.6 times more likely to crash when using their phone. That text can wait—focus on the road instead.

Pedestrians: Walk Smart, Stay Safe

If you’re walking near a school or park this summer, remember to use marked crosswalks only. Unmarked crossings can catch drivers off guard, especially in busy or shaded areas.

Before crossing, check both directions. At intersections with flashing lights, wait until they activate and ensure all drivers are fully stopped. Eye contact with approaching drivers is key—don’t step forward until you’re seen.

Parents: Watch Where You Drop Off

If you’re dropping your child off for a summer program, have them exit the car from the curb side. Never let them cross the road mid-block. When pulling away, always scan for kids or pedestrians near your vehicle, especially in busy parking lots or school zones.

Safety starts with awareness, and a few extra seconds of caution can prevent serious accidents.

Stay tuned to Surrey Speak for more updates on local safety, schools, and summer community happenings. Let’s keep Surrey safe, together.
