Surrey Kicks Off $3.7M Upgrade at Sunnyside Park

Surrey’s commitment to sports and recreation is on full display as the city breaks ground on a $3.7 million upgrade project at Sunnyside Park in South Surrey. The initiative includes a full replacement of four ball diamonds, bringing modernized, high-quality facilities to one of the community’s busiest parks.

The groundbreaking ceremony on June 30 officially launched construction and signaled Surrey’s continued investment in growing local sports infrastructure and tourism appeal.

What’s New at Sunnyside Park?

The project focuses on fields 1 through 4, located on the park’s west side. Key upgrades include:

  • Foul line and home run fencing
  • New team dugouts
  • Bleacher seating for spectators
  • Irrigated turfgrass for improved playability
  • Pathways linking to other park amenities
  • Lighting on Field #1 to support evening games

These enhancements aim to improve safety, accessibility, and overall player experience, while also supporting growing community interest in softball and youth sports.

Supporting Growth in Local Sports and Tourism

“This upgrade isn’t just about new fields—it’s about supporting a growing, active community,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “By investing in top-quality sports facilities, Surrey continues to strengthen its position as a leading sports tourism destination.”

The park’s enhancements align with Surrey’s vision of providing equitable access to recreation spaces while also preparing for increased demand as the city grows.

Long-Term Plan Backed by Strong Investment

This project is part of Surrey’s 2025–2029 Five-Year Capital Financial Plan, which includes funding for over 36 major parks and recreation projects across the city.

“These new ball diamonds at Sunnyside are one example of our broader commitment to outdoor sports infrastructure,” said Councillor Gordon Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation, and Sport Tourism Committee. “They’ll give local softball clubs and sports organizations more space to grow, train, and compete right here in South Surrey.”

More Projects on the Horizon

With dozens of capital projects underway or in planning, Surrey is making strong strides toward creating a city where families, athletes, and visitors alike can thrive.
