Surrey Residents Warned: Treat Sunburn Seriously, Says Expert

As heatwaves intensify, a physiologist urges Surrey residents to avoid common sunburn mistakes and seek medical care for serious burns.

Heatwaves Prompt Health Alerts Across Europe and UK
As record-breaking temperatures sweep through the UK and Europe, Surrey residents are being urged to take sun safety seriously. With the UK Health Security Agency issuing heat health alerts, and countries like Spain and Portugal overwhelmed by extreme heat, the risk of heat-related injuries is rising rapidly.

Why Sunburn Isn’t Just Skin Deep
Dan Baumgardt, Senior Lecturer in Physiology at the University of Bristol, is sounding the alarm on improper sunburn treatment. Speaking to The Conversation, Baumgardt warned, “Every burn deserves proper care, no matter how small.” He explained that while sunburn may appear minor, it can lead to complications such as infection, dehydration, heatstroke, and even long-term skin damage or cancer.

The One Word to Avoid: ‘Never’
One of the most dangerous misconceptions, Baumgardt says, is assuming a painless sunburn is harmless. “If a burn doesn’t hurt, it could mean the nerve endings are damaged — and that’s not a good sign.” In severe cases, burns may involve varying depths of skin damage and require urgent medical attention, especially if they cover a large area or involve sensitive regions.

What to Do When You’re Burned
Baumgardt advises Surrey residents to follow these three crucial steps for treating sunburn:

  1. Cool the area: Use gently running water for at least 20 minutes. Avoid ice or very cold water, which can worsen the damage.
  2. Cover the burn: Use cling film to prevent infection and monitor the injury without sticking to the skin.
  3. Seek medical advice: If the burn is larger than the size of your hand, blistered, or shows signs of infection, consult a doctor immediately.

Why Prevention Still Matters Most
Despite the high number of sunburn cases each summer, Baumgardt stresses that this is the most preventable type of seasonal burn. “Sun protection is vital,” he said, urging people to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and apply high-SPF sunscreen frequently.

Surrey at Higher Risk During Heat Spells
With temperatures expected to remain high throughout the summer, local health officials are echoing Baumgardt’s advice. Residents—particularly children, seniors, and those with sensitive skin—are most at risk during prolonged outdoor exposure.

A Call for Vigilance
Baumgardt concludes, “While this summer shows no signs of cooling down, make sure you at least stay cool – and safe.” He reminds Surrey locals that sunburn is more than just a short-term discomfort. Proper treatment today can prevent serious complications tomorrow.
